Remember the rules of the road on your bicycle this summer

May 8, 2008

As the weather warms up, it’s time to dust off the bikes and start riding. A leisurely bike ride is a great way to get exercise and spend time with family, and it can also be useful in teaching children road safety and responsibility.

Bicycle safety should always be a top priority for parents of daredevil biker children. Before venturing out on your bikes this summer, remind yourself of a few safety essentials.

Since most bicycle accidents involve head injuries, getting your child a proper helmet is an absolute necessity. Make sure your child’s helmet fits properly and can be adjusted if necessary. When buying a new bicycle helmet in Canada, look for either the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) or the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission — US) sticker. This will ensure that your child’s helmet meets the appropriate safety requirements.

Just like car maintenance, bike maintenance is also an important aspect of safety. At least once a year, ensure that bicycle chains are clean and well-lubricated, tires are properly inflated and brakes are functional and not worn out. Increase the frequency of these mini tune-ups the more your child rides.

Finally, it is up to parents to teach their children the rules of the road. Younger children should stick to bicycle paths or trails at first, then graduate to roads once they gain more stability and confidence on their bikes. Stay to the right of traffic, never ride after dark and obey all traffic signs.

Most important of all: Have fun and be safe!
