Transcona community centre eyes expansion
In hopes of garnering some financial backing from the City, the Park City West Community Centre (PCWCC) has completed a 289-person survey in the Transcona area to see what improvements, if any, local residents want at the community centre.
Scott Donald, vice-president of sports at PCWCC said the results of the survey were very encouraging.
“Eighty-eight per cent of people were in support of adding to the PCWCC around the concept of healthy living,” said Donald.
Donald said one of the reasons that healthy living is a concern for residents is that the Transcona area doesn’t have a YMCA.
The proposed addition to the community centre involves repositioning existing outdoor rinks and turning one into an indoor rink, and building a new two-floor, 1,5000 to 2,000 square-foot “healthy living” facility.
Donald said he hopes the YMCA, which has been looking to expand into Transcona, will eventually be a tenant in this building.
The proposed building has a construction budget of $3.5 million, but the operating budget is not yet known.
The PCWCC is waiting for the green light from the Greater Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, after which they will begin fundraising.
