New library a hit with kids, parents

March 11, 2010

The new Headingley Library appears to be a hit with both kids and their parents.

Vanessa Keryluk, who has lived in the Rural Municipality of Headingley for nine years, said the new facility has been a popular destination with her two children since it opened Jan. 18.

“We go about twice a week,” Keryluk said. “We went to the old facility just as much, but as soon as we walked into the new building we were very happy with how much space there was and that there is a separate area where the children have room to read.”

Keryluk said the additional space makes outings to the library much more enjoyable for her and her children.

They’re not alone in that respect. Staff member Kathie MacIsaac said the new facility is a treat to come to every day.

“This facility is so much more open and brighter,” MacIsaac noted as she looked around the new building. “There is a lot more space and now we are able to expand and do things we were not able to do before.”

The additional space has allowed library staff to offer more children’s programming, according to MacIsaac.

“I do the children’s programming and that is really the area I enjoy working in,” she said. “We have Munch Madness starting (Feb. 1) and we have another program starting the following week, which is a library story time for preschoolers and that will be running for seven weeks.

“There’s lots in the works for the library and I definitely think it will bring more people from the community out to enjoy the new facility.”

The new library also offers a wider selection of books, according to head librarian Joan Spice.

“There are about 14,000 items out on the shelves and that is all due to the extra space we now have,” she said.

About 1,000 items that where previously kept in storage are now on display on the library’s new shelves.

Spice said that reaction to the new facility has been mostly positive so far.

An official grand opening of the library is scheduled for Apr. 24. For more information about the library or programming call 889-6013 or visit www.headinlgeylibrary.ca.
