Wyatt to stay in civic politics

Aug. 7, 2008

Russ Wyatt has confirmed that he will not be running for any federal party candidacy in the Elmwood-Transcona riding in the next federal election.

“It has been an honour to serve the constituents of the Transcona Ward, the best community in Winnipeg, and work in the greatest city in Canada,” Wyatt said, “and I look forward to continuing to fulfill my obligation to the good people of the Transcona Ward.”

Over the last several months Wyatt has been approached by the New Democratic Party, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party to go forward as a candidate in the process of their respective nominations.

Bill Blaikie, NDP MP for the Elmwood-Transcona riding, will not be running in the next federal election.

Wyatt, who was re-elected in Winnipeg’s civic election in October 2006, said running for mayor in the next civic election is not out of the question.

“That may always be a possibility in the future,”Wyatt said. “But that is still three years away.”
